Somerville Theatre

Nominated for: BEST Indie Cinema

Somerville Theatre 55 Davis Sq Somerville MA (617) 625-5700

The Somerville Theatre is located in Davis Square Somerville. In addition to the recently renovated original auditorium (a 900 seat ornate picture palace with balcony, stage, and huge screen) the Somerville also has 4 smaller cinemas, all designed with style.

The film programming is a mix of first-run movies (at $7.00 on evenings and weekends, it is the cheapest place in Boston to see a new movie, even if all the folks paying $9.25 in Harvard Square haven't figured it out yet), plus some second-run, art-house, and specialty schedules. Home of the Independent Film Festival of Boston, the 24-hour Boston Sci-Fi Marathon, and of course numerous live events.

The projection staff are trained professionals, all members of the local projectionists union, so film presentations are generally superior to any of the movie houses downtown.

The concession stand features freshly popped corn and is served with real butter. They also sell many kinds of candy, tea, and coffee.

Starting in April, the Somerville Theatre will be the only movie theater in the Boston area that sells beer and wine - soon you will be able to take a beer with you to the movies!

The staff is friendly, but not in a fake corporate way - and unlike some indie theaters, there is no pretense about the place - it still has that 'Somerville' feel to it. Many of the staff have been there for a while - not a lot of changeover, which is a good thing here.

Love the Somerville Theatre. Perfect mix of top hits and indie films. Great concessions (ice cream, popcorn, beer & the usual suspects).

Good popcorn, decent first-run movies, and interesting festivals. What more could you want?

Still few places where there's beer on tap on your way in. Didn't help me get through The Great Gatsby, but still one of my favorite places to watch a film

Awesome - beer in a theatre? The venue is great and has tons of charm. Not at all like the cubicles that other theaters are.
