On June 20, 1969 the New England Aquarium opened its doors to the public for the first time. The Aquarium was designed to provide an underwater experience for the visitor, and also to be a cultural institution that would reconnect Boston to its waterfront. In its more than 35 years, the Aquarium has grown a great deal. In line with its mission to "Present, Promote and Protect the World of Water," the Aquarium educates, entertains and reaches out to visitors in order to help them better understand the beauty and fragility of aquatic life and environments. Aquarium highlights include the 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank that houses sharks, stingrays, giant seaturtles and more; the penguin exhibit that spans much of the first floor and features more than 60 penguins from three different species; the Simons IMAX® Theatre, home of the largest movie screen in New England; a seasonal Aquarium Whale Watch taking passengers straight from Boston's waterfront to one of the largest whale feeding grounds in the world; and much more.
